The Four-on-the-Floor Kick Pocket
The secret to a driving rolling bassline is leaving room for the kick drum.
In standard 4/4 techno and psytrance, the kick plays on steps 1, 5, 9, and 13. To prevent the bass from muddying the kick impact, we leave steps 1, 5, 9, and 13 empty and start by placing 16th-note F2 root notes (row 17) on the 3 sixteenth-notes following each beat.

Step 1: The Four-on-the-Floor Kick Pocket
The secret to a driving **rolling bassline** is leaving room for the kick drum.
In standard 4/4 techno and psytrance, the kick plays on steps **1, 5, 9, and 13**. To prevent the bass from muddying the kick impact, we leave steps 1, 5, 9, and 13 **empty** and start by placing 16th-note **F2** root notes (row 17) on the 3 sixteenth-notes following each beat.
Step 2: Velocity Dynamics (The Gallop Groove)
If every 16th note has equal volume, the bassline sounds stiff. To make it **roll and bounce**, we apply velocity dynamics.
We accentuate the first 16th-note after the kick (steps **2, 6, 10, 14**) with high velocity (**115**), and lower the velocity on the following steps (**85** and **75**). Press **▶ Play** to hear the 'gallop' rhythm emerge!
Step 3: Octave Jump Accent & Syncopation
Now we add melodic movement. By jumping up **one octave to F3** (row 29) on the offbeat steps **4, 8, 12, and 16**, the bassline takes on a driving, hypnotic trance roll.
Notice how the high octave notes lift the momentum right before the next kick hits!
Step 4: Sub-Minor 3rd Turnaround (Complete Roll)
To finalize the rolling pattern, we introduce a subtle harmonic turnaround at the end of the bar.
On step 15 (position 14), we change the note from F2 to **G#2** (row 20, Minor 3rd). This creates an infectious melodic loop that propels the track forward endlessly.
