ACADEMY← Exit to Academy PortalThe Classic D&B Two-Step
Learn to program the high-speed 2-step rhythm that forms the backbone of modern Drum & Bass, complete with syncopated kicks and rolling ghost snares.
Step 1 of 3Kick & Snare Backbone
At the core of the Drum & Bass two-step is a sparse, driving skeleton.
Unlike traditional breakbeats, the two-step keeps the second beat open. We place the Kicks (row 0) on steps 1 and 11 (positions 0 and 10), and the backbeat Snares (row 1) on steps 5 and 13 (positions 4 and 12).
Press play to hear the basic stepping energy at 172 BPM.

Step 1: Kick & Snare Backbone
At the core of the Drum & Bass **two-step** is a sparse, driving skeleton.
Unlike traditional breakbeats, the two-step keeps the second beat open. We place the **Kicks** (row 0) on steps **1 and 11** (positions 0 and 10), and the backbeat **Snares** (row 1) on steps **5 and 13** (positions 4 and 12).
Press play to hear the basic stepping energy at 172 BPM.
Step 2: Riding the Hats
Fast, driving hi-hats give D&B its high-speed momentum and carry the top-end energy.
We place **Closed Hats** (row 6) on every other step to form a solid 8th-note pulse (steps **1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 13**). To create a syncopated lift and momentum, we add an **Open Hat** (row 7) on the offbeats: step **7** (position 6) and step **15** (position 14).
Step 3: Rolling Ghost Snares
To make the beat 'roll' and sound alive, we add **ghost snares**. These are low-velocity snare hits that bridge the gaps between main notes.
We add softer snares on steps **8, 12, and 16** (positions 7, 11, and 15) with velocities set to **65, 60, and 55** respectively. This mimics a real drummer's subtle snare bounces and completes the rolling two-step groove.
