ACADEMY← Exit to Academy PortalThe Reese Bassline
Master the art of programming detuned Reese basslines. Learn to create rolling sub foundations, rhythmic syncopation, and tension-building octave jumps.
Step 1 of 3Sustained Sub Foundation
The signature of a dark Drum & Bass track is the heavy Reese Bass—a thick, detuned synth sound. To anchor the track, Reese basslines start with long, sustained sub frequencies.
We begin by placing the root note F1 (row 5) on step 1 (position 0) and step 9 (position 8), holding each note for 8 steps (half a bar).
Press play to feel the deep, continuous sub floor.

Step 1: Sustained Sub Foundation
The signature of a dark Drum & Bass track is the heavy **Reese Bass**—a thick, detuned synth sound. To anchor the track, Reese basslines start with long, sustained sub frequencies.
We begin by placing the root note **F1** (row 5) on step **1** (position 0) and step **9** (position 8), holding each note for **8 steps** (half a bar).
Press play to feel the deep, continuous sub floor.
Step 2: Rhythmic Cuts & Syncopation
Simply holding long notes can sound static. To add groove, we introduce **rhythmic cuts** and silence. By ending notes early, we let the kicks and snares punch through the bass.
We shorten our main notes to a length of **3** and add shorter notes on the second and fourth beats. We place **F1** (row 5) at:
- Step **1** (length 3)
- Step **5** (length 2)
- Step **9** (length 3)
- Step **13** (length 2)
This leaves steps 4, 7-8, 12, and 15-16 empty, creating rhythmic pockets.
Step 3: Melodic Motion & Octave Jumps
To finalize the Reese pattern, we add melodic variation and energy spikes using **octave jumps** and dark intervals like the minor 3rd (**G#1**, row 8) and perfect 4th (**A#1**, row 10).
We place:
- Root **F1** (row 5) on steps 1, 5, and 13
- Octave-up **F2** (row 17) on steps **4 and 12** to leap right before the snare hits
- Minor 3rd **G#1** (row 8) on step **7 and 15**
- Perfect 4th **A#1** (row 10) on step **9**
