ACADEMY← Exit to Academy PortalThe Breakbeat Groove
Sequence the syncopated kick timings, snare ghost notes, and open hat accents that define classic breakbeat and drum & bass.
Step 1 of 3Syncopated Kick Foundation
The foundation of any breakbeat is its syncopated kick pattern. Instead of straight downbeats, kicks bounce around the grid.
We place kicks on beat 1, the off-beat of beat 1, beat 3, and the off-beat of beat 3 (steps 1, 4, 9, and 11 on the grid). Press play to hear how this offset creates instant swing.

Step 1: Syncopated Kick Foundation
The foundation of any breakbeat is its syncopated kick pattern. Instead of straight downbeats, kicks bounce around the grid.
We place kicks on beat 1, the off-beat of beat 1, beat 3, and the off-beat of beat 3 (steps **1, 4, 9, and 11** on the grid). Press play to hear how this offset creates instant swing.
Step 2: Snares & Ghost Notes
Heavy backbeat snares ground the groove, while smaller 'ghost notes' add the signature shuffle.
We place heavy Snares on steps **5 and 13**. Then we add a syncopated snare on step **12** (position 11) and a soft snare on step **16** (position 15). This creates the classic syncopated roll into the next bar.
Step 3: Syncopated Hat Sync
Finally, we overlay **Hi-Hats** to drive the rhythm.
We place Closed Hats on steps **1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 13, and 15**. Then we add an off-beat Open Hat on step **7** (position 6). This off-beat accent gives the breakbeat its famous driving groove.
